At a time when artificial intelligence is reshaping how we work, think, and communicate, LEO11 delivered a powerful reminder: language professionals are not being replaced—they’re being elevated.

Linguist Education Online’s 11th Virtual Conference gathered hundreds of interpreters, translators, educators, and industry leaders from around the world to examine the future of the profession—and to reclaim the human element at its heart. The theme, “Elevate Your Human Game,” wasn’t just a slogan. It was a call to action.

We’re Not Competing with AI—We’re Leading It

The opening panel set the tone. Natalya Mytareva, Caitilin Walsh, and Diego Cresceri delivered an unfiltered look at the evolving landscape of language services. AI was part of the conversation, of course—but so was longevity, relevance, and upskilling.

“It’s not about competing with machines,” one panelist said. “It’s about building what machines can’t: trust, connection, and cultural understanding.”

There was broad consensus: language professionals must evolve, but that doesn’t mean surrendering our identities. Instead, it means cultivating skills machines can’t mimic—like emotional intelligence, contextual fluency, and the cultural intuition that underpins true communication.

“The most beneficial advice was that as an interpreter (and translator) I really must overcome my reluctance to use AI tools like ChatGpt.” – Jonathan

“The most beneficial information I gained from this panel was the emphasis on how advances in AI are reshaping the language services industry, not just as a challenge, but as an opportunity.” – Eucaris

“This was a common thread throughout the conference, but I learned much more about AI than ever before. I immediately downloaded a couple of the AI apps that were mentioned by the panelists to try them out.” – Jose

These reflections mirrored the session’s key message. Panelists emphasized the importance of understanding what AI can and cannot do. They urged attendees to experiment with tools, compare outputs, and—most importantly—learn how to write prompts that yield useful results.

One of the most helpful analogies shared was this:

“Think of AI like a new intern—full of potential, capable of handling repetitive tasks, but still learning. It needs clear instructions, supervision, and thoughtful direction to be truly effective.”

This framing underscored a critical takeaway: AI can support our work, but it’s not a substitute for professional judgment, experience, or human insight. The professionals who thrive will be the ones who can guide these tools—not the ones who expect them to lead.

From Strategy to Skillset: Becoming Future-Ready

Sessions throughout the conference echoed a powerful shift—from fear of AI to fluency with it.

Pascale Tremblay’s standout presentation reframed AI not as a threat but as a catalyst for professional growth. Her advice:

  • Develop complementary skills, not competitive fear
  • Invest in tech fluency as a new form of literacy
  • Lean into your uniquely human value: empathy, nuance, presence

“This wasn’t about resisting AI,” one attendee wrote in the chat, “which is a different take on things.”

That mindset carried over into the Tech-Savvy Freelancing panel, where Gabriela Siebach, Nora Díaz, and Florencia Russo brought an energy that was nothing short of contagious. They didn’t sugarcoat the pressures of modern freelancing—like the push to produce faster, the influx of AI tools, and the shifting expectations of clients—but their enthusiasm was electric.

Each panelist shared stories of how they stay relevant, how they test and choose new tools, and how they’ve reimagined their roles in a rapidly evolving industry. They didn’t just talk about adapting—they modeled it.

And the audience followed suit. The chat lit up with shared tools, thoughtful links, and personal tips. Attendees began answering each other’s questions, offering encouragement, and building on each other’s momentum.

What started as a panel became a full-fledged crowdsourced masterclass.

“Thanks for this tip!”

“I’ve been using that tool for months and never knew you could do that.”

“Just bookmarked this whole thread—great stuff.”

More than just tech talk, this session captured the spirit of shared growth and peer learning. It reminded us that staying future-ready isn’t just about mastering tools—it’s about showing up for each other with generosity, curiosity, and a willingness to learn together.

“I learned about prompt engineering from Pascale, who showed us how to shift from human cognitive translation to a structured thought process architecture. She urged us to think critically when designing inputs for AI tools to enhance their effectiveness. This inspired me to utilize the AI tools we have more effectively.” — Heidy

“The session reframed language expertise as a blend of tech skills and human strengths.” — Michely

“Pascale’s presentation was great! I learned about shift-left transformation.” — Hongan

From Freelancer to Entrepreneur: Crafting a Sustainable Career

Eddie Arrieta’s session, “Content That Connects,” proved especially popular among freelancers. With clear strategies and real-world examples, he helped participants reimagine their online presence as a business tool—not just a portfolio.

He emphasized:

  • Storytelling that builds trust
  • SEO as a non-negotiable skill
  • Content as a funnel, not just a blog post

“This presentation gave me a clearer definition of search engine optimization.” – Carlos

“It was a deep dive into multilingual content, and storytelling that drives results.” — Natalia

The message wasn’t about becoming marketers—it was about owning your expertise and communicating it with clarity and confidence in a digital world.

Excellence Is Not a Talent—It’s a Habit

Janis Palma brought the conference to a powerful close with her session on advanced interpreting skills. Drawing from her decades of legal interpreting experience, in and out of the courtroom she focused on the interpreter’s trifecta: accuracy, speed, and ethical clarity.

What made the session memorable wasn’t just the content—but the tone. Janis delivered it as both a masterclass and a challenge.

She guided attendees through high-pressure, real-world scenarios and offered strategies for making fast decisions without compromising professional standards.

Her message was clear:

“Excellence is not a talent—it’s a habit.”

Attendees left energized, with new strategies for handling high-stakes moments—and a renewed commitment to showing up sharp, grounded, and ready.

Evolving Together, Not Alone

What made LEO11 different wasn’t just the lineup—it was the energy. There was no panic. No apocalyptic talk about obsolescence. Instead, there was strategy, solidarity, and clarity.

In the final breakout rooms, participants connected directly with experts like Bruce Adelson, Scott Mirsky, Eddie Arrieta, and LEO leadership. They asked hard questions about compliance, career growth, and finding their footing in a shifting landscape. Many stayed past the official end time—because the conversation was just so important and relevant.

“As a 100% remote medical/educational interpreter […] it is so refreshing to “reach out” to colleagues and professionals in the industry, if for a couple of days; keep up the good work LEO!” – Pete

This wasn’t just a conference. It was a reminder that we are part of something bigger—and that we’re evolving, not alone, but together.

Looking Ahead

“Elevate Your Human Game” wasn’t a warning. It was a map.

LEO11 helped language professionals move beyond every day routine mode and toward strategic, confident adaptation. The tools are here. The community is strong. And the future is something we build—not something we brace for.

“This was an excellent conference and the panelists are some of the leading experts in the profession. They were very prepared for it and the sessions were engaging. It was my first conference and I will be looking for certain to participate again.” – Roger
