Sight Translation Techniques for Court Interpreters

You are asked to translate a police report from English into your target language during a court case. What do you do when you come across a word which you are unfamiliar with? Do you know how to find a suitable replacement?

This course will introduce you to valuable theoretical information and the practical skills necessary for executing flawless sight translation. A larger portion of the unit is dedicated to skill-building exercises.

If taking the course with instructor evaluation, students must submit 2 interpretation exercises in order to receive a certificate of completion.

Feedback from interpreters who took this course

“I took the courses for Florida Certification renewal. I selected the Consecutive Interpretation and Sight Translation for Legal Interpreters. These courses are excellent for self-study. In my opinion, they are comprehensive of all major aspects. Each contains an overview of principles of interpretation which are mainly applicable to the judicial mode, but content of the non-judicial mode, such as conference interpretation, is also covered. Both the sight translation exercises and the consecutive interpretation practices were challenging and conducive to learning of new vocabulary. The consecutive interpretation contained many instances of long answers by the witness, putting the examinee through his/her paces as the exercise is performed. The Course Administrator was easy to work with, and he cooperated fully in the registration and other processes. I recommend these courses for every interpreter needing further training or requiring continuing ed for renewal of certification in his/her state.”
