Video Remote Interpreting: Pros and Cons

Elena has worked as a medical interpreter for more than 12 years, and is state-certified with DSHS and nationally certified with CCHI. She currently works as a Senior interpreter and trainer with a VRI company in the US.
Learning Objectives:
a) Familiarize interpreters with Video Remote Interpreting;
b) Discuss the most frequently asked questions about VRI, pros and cons;
c) Discuss how VRI is different and similar to onsite and telephonic interpreting and
d) How VRI works with ASL and the particular challenges for this language.
e) Use of VRI with such tools as online glossaries, online translations of consents used by clients, etc.
Summary of Topics:
How VRI works in general, and specifically what are the principal benefits, complications and challenges of working with interpreters that are remote. For example, in small towns, it may be ideal to have remote interpreters, as the local interpreters may know the patient and family. There are technical issues that do occur, and we will discuss how they can be resolved. The interpreter and the provider alike require training on how to use the VRI system, technical things like the mute button, as well as the use of 1st and 3rd person interpretation. Training of interpreters and providers for VRI use will be addressed as well within this session.
